Dad's Military Records US Navy

This is not a complete history.  My father volunteered in July 1943 and went to boot camp at Farragut in Idaho.  After a brief leave he went to San Diego to radar school.  From there he went east and was placed on the USS Garfield, a destroyer escort.  On the ship they went on one practice run to Bermuda.  They then escorted a new aircraft carrier to Brazil.  Finally he went on a convoy mission to Africa.  At that time as the radarman he did see enemy planes on his screen.  After this mission he was in radio school.  First he attended school in Clarksville, Arkansas.  After this he went to Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.  Shortly after completing school he was released from active duty and was part of the reserves.  As noted in the honorable discharge he was released form the reserved in September 1948.

Ileen and JIm Wardle lived in Burley--Snow of 1952

These pictures are labeled 1953.  As such this must have been Burley Idaho were our family went to try their hand at potato farming.  Sara was born in 1950 and Connie in January of 1952.  Captions were written by Dad.  It appears that they have outdoor plumbing from the pictures, and two very old vehicles, one a pick-up truck.

William Ashton participates in the 1889 4th of July program in Whitney

I found this on Family Search.  It was contributed by Alexis Beckstead.  William Ashton is my great great great grandfather.  I descend from his daughter Mary while the Becksteads descend from Sarah.  I also note that family search has added a middle name; William Albert Ashton.

In the book "The Trail Blazer, a history of the development of Southeastern Idaho," by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, it states that Amasa Beckstead provided Accordion music for the 4th of July program in 1889. In the same program it mentions that his Grandpa Ashton gave a speech. Other relatives added to the entertainment: Andrew Beckstead gave a speech, Elton Beckstead demonstrated a Step Dance. Joseph Beckstead sang a song and provided mouth-organ music with Riley Clark. These were among 43 numbers in the long program. The small community really knew how to celebrate.
