This scene portrays somewhat accurately the experience of the Martin Handcart Company at the Sweetwater, crossing before Martin's Cove. The lines given to Brother Astle were actual lines spoken by another handcart company member, and as his wife offered to pull the handcart, the Valley Boys volunteered.
